Bogomilism was an austere religion which arose in what is now Bulgaria about the middle of the tenth century. Ostensibly Bogomilism was a Christian heresy, but this like much of the history of the religion is subject to dispute. What is not controversial is that the founder was an Orthodox Christian priest named Bogomil.

One major source of the religious movement was discontent with the luxury and ostentaciousness of the organized Churches. The puritanical rejection of the Church organizations drew upon other sources for what became its theology.
