Four A.M. East of Elko

Traveling in the train
At 4 A.M. east of Elko
I awoke
While we were
Passing through a tunnel.
No clue at the time
Of where we were,
When wham! the world changed
From a darkly confined train car
To a moonlit masterpiece
Of open wideness walled in by
Silvery, snow-dusted mountains
Silhouetted against a luminous sky
Of scattered shards of clouds.
And high in the sky
Orchestrating it all
Was the most radiantly limpid
Full moon set behind
A splash of cloud shreds
Looking for all the world
Like a light glowing
From within a deep pool.
